Flow Studies, 2nd Edition

David Vining asked me to take his Daily Routines for trombone and make them more euphonium-specific. Here’s my promo video for the book!

Miniature LI – Dr. Pepper
By Matthew Kennedy
Matthew Kennedy is using the quarantine to be more creative. He’s been writing sets of miniatures for friends and colleagues around the country. This one is the first from his second set (which is based upon favorite beverages). I picked Dr. Pepper.

Reverie by James Naigus
a Quarantine Duet
During this Coronavirus, Steven Mead has been recording remote duets with a number of top euphonium artists. We decided perform this fantastic and beautiful duet, Reverie by hornist and composer James Naigus, who also played the piano part on this recording. I first heard the piece in the summer of 2019 at Blue Lake Fine Arts camp, performed by my friends Matt Haislip and Katey Halbert. This was a new piece for Steve, and I think he likes it quite a bit.

Dueling Fundamentals
A book of duets by Alex Lapins
I was fortunate enough to get an advance copy of Alex Lapin’s book Dueling Fundamentals. Part of the deal was that I would record a few with French euphonium superstar Bastien Baumet. Take a listen to these samples:

Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra
Canterbury Chorale – Jan Van Der Roost
This is a selection from my very first concert with the Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra in Taiwan. It was an adventure, and a beautiful one, at that, as you can hear below. Some of my favorite people in the world are in this video!

Vocalise-Étude
Charles Lefebvre
I’ve been working with Steven Larson, playing through the entire collection of Vocalises-Études I published a few years ago. This one, by Charles Lefebvre, was an instant hit with us. We thought it was such a nice piece we decided to record it right then and there. This is one of 30 vocalises in the collection I published. Click here to get the collection!

Concert Variations
Jan Bach
This is probably in the top two pieces ever composed for euphonium. A true tour-de-force for both ensemble members, it ends with a triple (!) fugue. It was such a pleasure to put this one together with Jayoung Hong.

Quarantine Special #3
Marcel Bitsch – Vingt Études, #2
I’ve decided to use the quarantine to learn and record some etudes from a trumpet book, Marcel Bitsch’s fiendishly difficult Vingt Études. Successfully performing this one requires maximum flexibility and manipulation of air flow.
